Where there is hope…

January 17, 2011

Throughout my life I have met challenges with a belief that ultimately everything will be alright.  In some of my darkest days I would find myself reading a quote, “Do what you have to do to get through today, and that will put you in the best place to be tomorrow”.  What that quote meant to me was a combination of things, a phrase that my Mother would say, “Pull up your bootstraps and get going” or “Don’t trouble trouble til trouble troubles you”.  And then from the play,  ” Steel Magnolias” the quote “That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”. (quote credited to*Friedrich Nietzsche)

All of those quotes reminded me that yes, it may be hard right now, difficult and perhaps feel unbearable, but if you bow to it, you may not recover. So keep the light, stay the course and believe that it will get better. Every second you are alive, it will get better.

And my favorite one of all is something that my friend Ina Jones said to me, “Hope rises”.  Yes, that is what hope does, it rises and takes you from a place of darkness to a place of light.

Elie Wiesel(a Romanian-born Jewish-American[1] writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor, in his book “Night” spoke about hope, and about finding moments of the day to see something other than what was all around him, to find some peace and hope in that horror he and so many others endured left me awestruck. If he and others could find that speck of hope, that ray of light in the midst of such misery and carnage than I know when times are tough, I can certainly get through a day to face another.

Through ice laden trees the sun shines brightly.

So go ahead and pull up your boot straps, and know that tomorrow WILL be a better day and  also know that hope rises and where there is hope, there is light.

Great post. Great tag too! I find it hard to be hopeful when feeling hopeless, but, I’m irrepressible when not.

Thank you very much. I’ve had days when I thought “how could it get any worse” and then will hear something that puts my troubles in perspective. Have a wonderful day!

“That which does not kill us, makes us stronger” is right, but he missed one thing – The more closer an experience is to killing us (tougher), the stronger we become. This article is well written, actually.

It took me a while to really understand that particular quote. Thank you for replying!

Wow, that was truly beautiful! I love your writing and your post was very personal and inspirational. I remember when I heard Elie Wiesel speak for the first time and I just cried my eyes out, it baffled me that he could be so strong after all that he had been through!

You seem like a very strong and smart person and I’m sure that you’re going to be able to face everything and anything in your life; you certainly have the right way of approaching life!

    Cheers,
    Rinki

Rinki — Thank you for those wonderful comments. It must have been truly amazing to hear Elie Wiesel speak, he was able to write about something so dark and terrible, yet allow us to see it through his eyes. Those moments when he went to a silent place and thought of his loved ones were the moments that I related to. He made me think about love and how love is truly the most spiritual, soulful thing we have.
I cannot read German (on your blog) but, I have a feeling we have a lot in common!
      Cheers,
      Lori

Thank you for your post. One of my Grandma’s favourite sayings was “don’t go looking for trouble because it will find you soon enough!”. Why is it our soundest wisdom seems to be handed down from mother to daughter to grand-daughter? Hmm….I think I’ve just given myself an idea for another post!
    God bless you, Pam.

Thank you Pam! That’s a great quote. In fact just before I wrote this I had an idea about quotes passed down from generation to generation. You are right it is a good idea! I’ll follow and see!

Lori, great blog. When life has me at the bottom, I look left and right and thank God that my problems are less than that of some others, an pray every day for what I have. No matter how little, how raw, how unpleasant, I give thanks for my health, and the health and safety of loved ones. Never look back, keep your spirit, and forge ahead. My glass is always half Full!
